Leading Communication, Dissemination, and Results Exploitation
One year after the launch of the European XTREMOLIFE project, Erdyn attended its first General Assembly, held last week in Las Palmas, Canary Islands. This meeting allowed partners to review the project’s progress and define the next steps of their collaboration.
XTREMOLIFE aims to accelerate the bioprospecting and discovery of extremophile microorganisms from desert, polar, and volcanic environments, as well as the identification of new bioactive compounds with high potential for commercial application. Funded with €4.5 million under Cluster 6 of the Horizon Europe program, the project brings together 11 partners from five European countries: the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and France.
Within this consortium, Erdyn is responsible for communication, dissemination, and results exploitation activities. Its role is to ensure the visibility of the work carried out, facilitate knowledge sharing among stakeholders, and support the identification of opportunities to maximize the impact and adoption of the project’s outcomes.
XTREMOLIFE: A European Project Unlocking the Biotechnological Potential of Extremophiles
Extremophiles are microorganisms that thrive in extreme environmental conditions, such as high salinity, intense heat or cold, and highly acidic or alkaline pH levels. These remarkable organisms are of great scientific interest across many disciplines, ranging from ecology to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
To study these remote and extreme environments, deployable and portable sensors and sampling platforms—including FerryBox, XTREMOsensor, and microscopic imaging systems—are currently under development. These innovative tools can operate from ships, small boats, or during field expeditions. They will be deployed in extreme aquatic ecosystems such as Antarctica (polar, cold, variable salinity), the Canary Islands (volcanic, high temperature, low pH, arid), and the Tabernas Desert in Spain (desert, hypersaline, high temperature, low precipitation). The systems will provide real-time environmental data to optimize sampling and collection strategies, pushing the boundaries of field research in these unique environments.
At the same time, XTREMOLIFE will explore the vast culture collections of extremophiles held by the project partners—a valuable yet still underutilized resource. The project aims to elucidate how these microbial communities grow, interact, and can be harnessed for industrial applications in fields such as pharmaceuticals, chemistry, and biotechnology.
Erdyn’s Strategic Role in Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation
After supporting the consortium in writing the Impact section during the proposal submission, Erdyn is now the Work Package Leader for Communication, Dissemination, and Exploitation activities.
We assume full responsibility for communication and dissemination activities. This includes managing the project’s website and LinkedIn page, as well as creating all communication materials such as flyers, roll-up banners, and PowerPoint presentations. We also act as the main media interface and represent the project at various events.
Erdyn leads the activities dedicated to exploiting project results in order to maximize their value, reach, and practical applications. This encompasses commercialization, technology transfer, and implementation strategies. We will organize three workshops, conduct a market analysis, and draft a roadmap to help partners optimize the uptake of the project’s findings.
Furthermore, XTREMOLIFE stands out through creative communication and public engagement activities developed in partnership with two consortium members:
Micropia Museum (Amsterdam): In collaboration with this museum entirely dedicated to microbes (welcoming 110,000 visitors per year), initiatives will include interactive lab presentations with visitors, a “Microbe of the Month” feature, and a dedicated temporary exhibition during the final six months of the project.
Citizen Science with NIVA & Viking Cruises: A citizen science program led by NIVA on board Viking Cruises ships will introduce XTREMOLIFE to a broader audience. Up to 1 million passengers per year will have the opportunity to attend daily lectures by scientists, watch informative videos and documentaries, and visit shipboard laboratories to get directly involved in the research.
